We tested the corrosion resistance of the Novatik NATURA stone coated metal roofing at one of the leading construction-material testing laboratories in the United States: TESTING according to ASTM B117 – exposure to salt spray for 1000 hours.
The 1000-hour salt-spray test is a method used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of construction materials. This procedure was carried out under ASTM B117, a standard developed by ASTM International (American Society for Testing and Materials), which defines the operating practices for a salt spray (fog) test chamber.
The ASTM B117 test involved exposing two Novatik NATURA samples to the same corrosion conditions as two reference samples made of G90 galvanized steel.
The samples were placed in a dedicated support rack at an angle between 15° and 30° from vertical. They did not touch each other, and the saline solution from one sample did not drip onto another. The salt used was 99.9% sodium chloride, and the sprayed saline solution had a concentration of 5%. The concentration was checked with a specific-gravity hydrometer under standard laboratory conditions.
The chamber temperature was maintained at 95°F ± 3°F. The fallout solution collected after spraying was checked to ensure a deposition rate between 1.0 and 2.0 ml/h for a collection area of 80 cm². The pH of the collected solution was measured and kept between 6.5 and 7.2.
The results were interpreted by comparing how corrosion affected the Novatik NATURA samples versus the reference samples (G90 galvanized steel).
The attached images clearly show that the reference sample (G90 galvanized steel) experienced significant corrosion damage, while the Novatik NATURA sample maintained its integrity, achieving the maximum score of 10 out of 10 and demonstrating clearly superior corrosion resistance.
By exposing materials to an aggressive salt-spray environment for 1000 hours, the test provides insight into long-term material durability under accelerated corrosion conditions. This is especially relevant for buildings exposed to marine, industrial, or other harsh environments, as the test helps indicate when materials begin to show corrosion-related degradation.
